ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
I hope to change the honor culture at Duke, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of our honor code across campus. Check out my Experience section to see more about steps I’ve already taken! I am also currently talking to professors about streamlined testing procedures to maintain efficiency while preventing honor code violations.
FACULTY-STUDENT INTERACTIONS
Next year, I also hope to start a movement between professors of increased Sakai usage to make sure students are always well-informed of how they are doing in their classes. Several students have complained about turning in assignments and not getting timely feedback and I’d like to start a conversation with the faculty to make faculty-student interactions more transparent.
ACADEMIC RESOURCES
I also believe that DSG Academic Affairs should have more direct contacts with academic resources on campus. With the help of DSG as student representatives, campus resources like the Career Center could reach students directly and Academic Affairs projects could directly impact interactions between students and the career center.
We all love Nasher Study Hall during finals week – but we also have stressful weeks during midterm seasons! I will work to provide more frequent resources to students to promote healthier study environments and group study spaces.
WITHIN DSG...
As senators, we are urged to think of project ideas based on programs at other peer institutions and take inspiration from them as we apply them to Duke’s unique campus and culture. I believe DSG should establish networks with such institutions – as an organization, we have strengths and weaknesses that can be shared with other universities to help others and learn from them at the same time. I’d hope to establish these networks as a resource for senators, introduced at our retreats.
I also want to increase interaction between Duke students and their representatives by setting up events where senators and exec members can connect with the student body. These events would include Q&As to increase awareness of DSG projects and increase transparency beyond DSG.
Furthermore, I think more of the student body should have a say in what goes on in DSG and what projects we implement. I think this can be accomplished by having suggestion boxes posted around campus. Posted around the boxes would also be quick summaries of projects recently completed by DSG to increase awareness. Currently, projects in DSG are chosen based off of members’ observations of what Duke could do better or is lacking in – I believe every student should feel comfortable noting the flaws in aspects of our home and depend on their student representatives to be a liaison to administrators and faculty. With more forums like Fix My Campus, the student body could be more engaged with DSG projects, also leading to greater engagement and voter turnout!!
